2018 August 05 Sunday

2018 August 05 Sunday in Grimes Iowa

66° start and a brief wind and rain event. It was 86° at noon and reached 92°

I conducted worship service at Cutty’s. Ella took a photo of m me with my mouth open. Not flattering but accurate.

For lunch we went to Hibachi Grill and Buffet. I ate some poor baby octopi, a dead bird, and part of a cow and a spring roll … Got to get my veggies.

While we were eating, Ella emailed some photos for development at Walmart. When we arrived, they weren’t ready. We did some shopping

And then some sitting and waiting.

And finally just forgot about the email and printed them from her phone.

They were photos from the balloon festival. She going to take them to the senior center tomorrow for the “State Fair Photo Contest” … really just to share.

G’nite y’all!

2018 August 04 Saturday Nye Family Reunion in Grimes Iowa

75° start and mostly overcast.

Coffee with friends just keeps growing. There were a dozen see one point. Standing in the background is Stoney, (left to right back row) Nancy, Sandy, Francis, Keith, and Sue in blue and white blouse but hidden behind Jean.

(near row left to right) Ella, Ted, and Jean. (not in the picture) Gail, Bob and myself.

After coffee, Ella and I came home to get some last minute things ready for the Nye Reunion.

We were invited to John and Dawn’s campsite for pizza. Brandon was there and so was Cindy. We stayed until about 9:30 which is time for old folks to be in bed.

2018 August 03 Friday

2018 August 03 Friday in Grimes Iowa

63° at the start, 83° by noon, and 95° by mid afternoon

We got into the truck this morning and the battery was dead. Our best guess is the security system started the lights flashing (horn doesn’t work) yesterday afternoon. We were with Kara in her car all afternoon and evening. We didn’t get home until late last night.

I got out my trickle charger, but it didn’t seem to be doing anything. I went next door and knocked on my neighbor’s door. When Don came to the door, I asked if he would come and jump my truck. he said he could do better than that. He had one of those instant start contraptions which he brought over and hooked up to the truck. All the bells and whistles in my truck started going off but all the engine did was click when I turn the key. So we let it just sit there on that charger thing for a moment and then I tried it again and it kind of groaned a little bit but didn’t start. So we waited a little longer and this time when I tried the key it just went back to clicking so. So we went to get his van and jump-started it and got it running.

Wanting to make sure it had chance to charge, we drove to the east side of Des Moines to pick up the worship bulletin for Sunday. It was something we needed to do anyway and it gave us an extra run to get the battery charged.

Continuing to charge the battery we drove through Burger King and got a couple of breakfast sandwiches.

We arrived at the senior center just a little early. And helped to get some of the things set up. And then I went for a couple walking laps around the inside of the building.

Once people started arriving, we played Fast Track. We played a couple of rounds of Fast Track. And then I walked three more laps around the inside of the building. By then it was time for lunch. It was tuna salad (without the bread), pickled beets (which I didn’t eat), watermelon, and bread pudding (which I did eat).

From there we drove to Fareway Foods to purchase items for the Nye Family Reunion tomorrow at the Cutty’s Lodge

I stayed in the truck with the engine running while Ella went in the store to buy supplies. I really want to put more energy into the truck than we take out.

That’s just the opposite of what I’m trying to do with my body where I’m trying to burn more calories than I eat. I live a very sedentary life and so is not easy for me to burn off those calories. If thinking burned calories I’d be as skinny as I was in high school.

Even at work on a busy day, it really isn’t physically taxing.

G’nite y’all!

2018 August 02 Thursday

2018 August 02 Thursday in Grimes, indianola, & Des Moines Iowa

56° in the morning and 78° at noon.

I checked my INR this morning and my blood is slightly too thick ( clots too easily) and my glucose level was higher than it should be (not dangerously high) the good news is that I’m still loosing weight.

The park looked so nice and peaceful this morning.

Cuttys 5 star camping resort is on 80+ acres with an 11 acre lake. There are a vast array of activities like swimming, monitors golf, tennis, basketball, shuffleboard, and more. Or just sitting around a campfire and relaxing.

There was a smaller group for coffee this morning.

Four more showed up as Ella and I were leaving.

However, Ella had a 9:30 meeting at the senior center. They were planning for a Wii Bowling Tournament to be held in September.

Kara, my niece, meet up with us at the senior center for lunch and played games.

She then came home with us afterward. She went swimming while I napped and Ella played on her phone.

Filed under smart aleck responses:
When someone says, in their best Schwarzenegger voice, “I’ll be Bach.” I say, “I’ll be Haydn!”

When ask how I’m doing, I’ll say, “My wife says I’m better than nothing. You take a compliment as you get it.”

When someone’s says, “What’s up?” I’ll answer, “Away from the center of attraction.”

What are some of your favorite retorts?

Indianola Balloon Classic was happening tonight so we went.

Then we ate at Dumpling Darlings in Des Moines East Village.

2018 August 01 Wednesday in Grimes Iowa

57° and hazy. The humidity is at 94% and climbing.

Coffee with friends at Cutty’s Cafe. Them to the Grimes Senior center for games and lunch. We head a new attendee play Fast Track with us today. It became clear very soon that he is in the early stages of dementia. He would turn over a card and we would explain each time which direction he was to move.

I excused myself saying I needed to go to the bathroom. He asked if I could show him the way, which I did. He finished before I did and left. I found out later that he had gotten lost and wandered around the hallways until he found us again.

I was relieved after lunch, a young woman came to retrieve him.

As I get older and seem to forget more things, I worry about whether it is normal aging it something more ipppnsidious.

After lunch we played bingo.

We went to Village Inn with thirteen other folks including our niece Kara.

Once we were home Nathan and William stopped over so that Nate could fasten a piece of quarter round millions at the base of our cabinets.

About six thirty we weren’t to the adult center to play Mexican Train.

There was lightning to the north of us as we came home.

2018 July 31 Tuesday

2018 July 31 Tuesday in Grimes Iowa

61° and hazy because of the humidity in the air at sunrise. It reached a high of 85° and was partly cloudy however the humidity dropped from 100% to 50%.

Today would have been my mother’s 111th birthday.

On that same day that my mother was born the Wright brothers made the first powered flight of a manner heavier than air machine. Now twelve men have walked on the moon and five hundred and thirty six people have been to space outside the Earth’s atmosphere.

Here are some U.S. statistics for the Year 1907*

The average life expectancy in theU.S.was 47 years old. Only 14 percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City Cost $11.00.

There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S.and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California With a mere 1.4 million people, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!

The average wage in the U.S. was 22 Cents per hour. The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, A dentist made $2,500 per year, A veterinarian$1,500 per year, A mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births in theU.S. took place at HOME 90% of all U.S. doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned by the press AND the government as ‘substandard.’

PRICES! Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from Entering into their country for any reason.

The Five leading causes of death in the U.S. Were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke
The American flag had 45 stars.Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn’t been admitted to the Union yet. The population of Las Vegas was only 30!
Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea hadn’t been invented yet. There was no Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.
Two out of every 10 U.S.adults couldn’t read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.
Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over-the-counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then, pharmacists said, ‘Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health.’

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A

We went for breakfast at Cozy Cafe.

We stopped at the post office next.

We arrived early at the senior center so we helped to put the center pieces, salt, pepper, and other things on the tables. After I got the games out, we played some Rummikub until Joyce arrived. We switched to Fast Track. We were part way through the game when Sue arrived and joined the game in progress as my partner. We lost. However we won the next one. Then it was time for lunch.

As we were finishing lunch we had a couple of special speakers from South Africa.

The pastor of the church that shares the Grimes Community Complex with the senior center (and other things) and his sister were born in South Africa. He came to the states a couple of years with his family (wife and daughters).

His sister works as a librarian for their Parliament (think Library of Congress). It was interesting to learn that their country has eleven official languages. And you thought having everything printed in English and Spanish was a pain. There are literally hundreds more languages spoken other than the 11 official ones.

They also have three capitals that co- govern. Minimum wage is equal to $1.25. However, most people work as casual labor and pay no taxes. And forget any preconceived notions of what the country is like. It is a very modern society.

Oh, by the way, did you notice that they are Caucasian? Yes, Europeans arrived there in the 1500s just like they did in North America. They are known as the rainbow nation because it is so very multicultural.

Sunset tonight was not very impressive.

However, the clouds in the Eastern sky at sunset were very impressive.

2018 July 30 Monday

2018 July 30 Monday in Grimes Iowa

61°

Another day of work at the fee booth (8-2:30) for me. Another day of coffee with friends followed by games and lunch with more friends. Then home to do some housework before retrieving me from the fee booth.

After work, we drove to Walmart for a few supplies.

Then I came home and worked on the bulletin and sermon ideas while Ella spent time on her phone reading and playing games.

Do you see what I see?

After her nap, Ella sorted her pills for the next few weeks. She found she was short on a couple, wen and went online and ordered them. A shirt time later she received notice that they were ready for pickup.

So what made another trip to Walmart for prescriptions, birdseed, and red spray paint (Rudolf the red nosed pickup needed a touch-up)

We came home and drive around the resort and ended up at the cafe for a small sundie.

W in Grimes Iowa

63° early and climbed the 78° after noon

Beautiful clouds this morning. 72° and mostly overcast at noon

I didn’t work at the fee booth today.

We had breakfast and coffee at the cafe this morning. Most of the usual game were there.

When Verizon opened, we were there to determine why we were unable to connect our phones to the HUM WiFi. They made an adjustment in the system settings and … TaDa … Mobile WiFi!

was the next stop for us.

We are looking for things to go with my new Santa apron.

I’m looking for some experienced looking woodworking tools. I didn’t find any. However, I purchased a basket of small toys for $7.

We stopped at Pizza Ranch for lunch.

When we returned home, I started coating the truckbed cover with liquid rubber. I only got the front section finished.

Sunset at Cuttys Camping Club.

2018 July 27 Friday in Grimes Iowa

58° this morning. I was up shortly after 5 and went out to greet the sun. It wasn’t there yet.

So I walked down to the lake and said good morning to the geese. By the way, it was darker than it appeared in the photos because the cellphone auto adjusts for low light.

By the time I returned, there was some color beginning to appear in the sky.

After breakfast we went for coffee with friends at Cuttys Campfire Cafe.

We were at the Grimes a Senior center for games and lunch.

Rudolf the red nose pickup was in n need of a full tank and a trip through the car wash. Can anyone tell my why the president foam is three colors?

I got a couple of sunset photos tonight

2018 July 25 Wednesday in

2018 July 25 Wednesday in Grimes Iowa

Without my phone I didn’t have a morning Sunrise shot this morning. and I really didn’t know what the temperature was at Daybreak. Today was hazy but bright.

I worked from 8 to 2: 30 today. Ella went to a coffee as usual and Stockton brought me an iced tea on her way out to go over to the Grimes seniorcenter.

While at work, since it was so slow, I began working on ideas for the August 5th sermon.

While I was working in the fee booth today, a truck pulled off the road and stopped at the beginning of our drive. It appeared to be carrying two large pieces of granite countertop, approximately 6 foot by 6 foot. He stopped, got out, tugged a little bit on the restraining straps, walked around the truck, scratched his head, and got back into the truck. He just sat there for a long time. Eventually another truck pulled up with two more men in it. They climbed up on the first truck with some extra stain restraining straps. They worked for quite a while making sure that the slabs were held good and steady. As they were finishing up, one of the men walked up to the fee booth with a cell phone in his hand. They had found it while they were working out there. I asked them what they were doing and he answered that in the middle of transporting, one of the slabs of granite had crackef down the middle. and they were trying to secure it before they moved it any further.

I thank them for bringing the phone up to me. After they had left, I checked the phone’s contact list and found the name of the owner. I did a search of Cutty members and found that there were several members that had the same last name but not the same first name. I began calling to see if I could find somebody who knew this person. but the phones numbers I called either belong to somebody else at this point, or didn’t answer, or went straight to voicemail. So as of the time I left work this afternoon I still hadn’t found the owner of the phone. I did put it on a charger so they would be fully charged incase someone tried calling. Maybe we can answer it and see if they had another way of getting hold of this person.

About the one the FedEx truck arrived with a package and it just so happened that it was my replacement phone. Yay!

Ella came and got me at 2: 30 when I was off work. we then went to Village Inn to join our friends who were already there eating their pie. Because I had not eaten lunch I ordered a meal and a piece of pie. We sat and visited for quite a while.

after we left Village in we drove into Des Moines to the Verizon store. They help me set up the new phone. and we also purchased a device to go in our truck that works with OnStar. It is called HUM X and does a multitude of things such as: gives roadside assistance, monitores your driving habits, monitores your vehicles systems, let’s you set showered limits and boundary limits which inform you if the vehicle exceeds a present speed or goes beyond a set distance (good for parents to monitor children’s driveing). It also, for an extra fee, provided you with WiFi on the road.

I was happy to get a working phone again. However because the old phone would not turn on, we were unable to do the quick and easy transfer of data directly from the old to the new. Which meant reloading and updating my apps.

It was nice to be able to capture this sunset.
