2018 August 26 Sunday

2018 August 26 Sunday in Grimes Iowa

71° with clouds. Reached a high of 82° around five o’clock.

Worship at Cutty’s was small. Only five of us. Sue’s loner electric scooter didn’t make it through the door to the adult center this morning for worship. It took three of us to push the thing inside. we got it hooked up to electric power and it charged for the next hour during worship service. And then did work for her to wear get back home with afterward. However we got a call saying that she had fallen at home and that they had called nine-one-one. Shortly the fire department showed up and since I was working at the fee booth, I directed them to her RV. Shortly after that the sheriff showed up and he saw the fire truck and went directly there.

I called Ella to let her know that Sue had fallen again. Ella talked to her and found out that Sue is okay. Her rolling stool got away from her again.

Late in the afternoon the overall gray day broke into individual clouds and let the sun peek through.

.

This photo is deceptive. It looks like blue sky with a few clouds. Really it is completely overcast except for that small section. A spattering of rain past through just before seven.

.

.

.A beautiful end to a gray day

2018 August 25 Saturday

2018 August 25 Saturday in Grimes Iowa

68° and more haze and smoke in the air in the morning. Reached 81° under mostly sunny skies at noon.

Breakfast at home and then coffee with the gang (Francis and Sandy, Keith and Jean, Stoney and Sue, Francis and Sharon, and Bob) at the cafe.

From there we picked up our mail. Instead of calling Ella about an appointment for an MRI on her right shoulder, they sent a letter. It is for a week away. And then she’ll have to wait for a doctor to review and then (maybe) set an appointment for treatment/surgery. And all of this head to happen before we leave Iowa at the end of September.

2018 August 24 Friday

2018 August 24 Friday in Grimes Iowa

66° and drizzle. It rained overnight but didn’t amount to anything.

Breakfast at the Cutty’s Cafe this morning and then to the Grimes senior center for games and lunch (which I couldn’t eat because it contained onions). Ella ate at the center. I went to McDonald’s. I still have a few hives from that trip to the ER on the 12th.

I came home for a nap before work. When we got home there was no water. The park’s was off to repair a leak. By the time my nap was over, the water was back on.

.

I relieved Dixie at the fee booth and then work that afternoon with Jim who left at 7. I worked until 10.

This grey overcast haziness it’s still due to the fires out west and Canada.

This summer’s relentless California wildfires have claimed at least a dozen lives and destroyed more than 1,200 homes. But along with the loss of life and property, the blazes have also taken a tremendous toll on taxpayers and the state’s huge tourism industry.

British Columbia is on fire. In this Canadian province, 56 wildfires ‘of note’ are active and continuing to blow smoke into the skies overhead.

My lovely wife came to visit with me after Card Jackpot tonight. She was going to just leave the truck and walk home. I convinced her to stay and wait the last hour and a half. She has been falling a lot in the last few months and I fear for her walking on the gravel road in the dark. By the way, she lost at Card Jackpot tonight. Usually she wins something to add back into our nickles and quarter jar. I think we’re still ahead a few cents for the season.

59° and hazy again. Another jacket day. 71° for the high. Grey all day.

Nothing exciting to report today.

.

Just a few of us for coffee this morning.

We went to the senior center for lunch but all I could eat was peas and carrots and the cherry pie with ice cream.

.

More of us showed up for supper. Pulled pork, baked beans, coleslaw, and a pumpkin bar for supper (no onions).

.

.

Ella and I played Rummikub before and after supper.

2018 August 22 Wednesday in Grimes Iowa

57° and hazy again to start the day. Reached 75° later in the day. We wore lite jackets when we went for coffee.

.

The resort is unusually quiet today. This front row of camping sites on Main Street is never empty. The local schools start this week which has families focused on other things. Labor Day is only a couple weeks away. So, many folks are waiting until then to camp.

.

The senior center head a good crowd today. That’s typical for Wednesday because it’s Bingo day.

.

.

Only seven of us for pie today. Tom and Sue had a doctor’s appointment and Gail was working.

Just Four for Mexican Train dominoes this evening.

2018 August 20 Monday

2018 August 20 Monday in Des Moines and Grimes Iowa

66° and rain in the morning. About 1/4″ overnight. Only reached 75° for the high.

We went to IHOP for breakfast. And then to the senior center in Grimes.

After the senior center we drove to Union Park UMC to get the bulletins for this coming Sunday.

Ella called the doctor to find out if they had made an appointment for her MRI. They had not. She was told it takes three to five business days to get it set up.

Later we went to Walmart for prescriptions and then to Costco for over the counter items.

2018 August 18 Saturday

2018 August 18 Saturday in Grimes Iowa

66° and a high fog or haze. Amazing, it nearly reached 90° today and was still at 85 at 6 p.m.

There was no work today and no senior center. I started working on the bulletin and sermon early this morning and didn’t fix breakfast. So, we had breakfast at the cafe this morning.

We had a short town hall meeting at 10:30 where they discussed items brought up at last months meeting and then addresses some new items which will be discussed by the board at their next meeting.

Keith and Jean took us Pizza Ranch for lunch. It was a reward for Ella watering their garden while they were away.

The afternoon was taken up with more work on the bulletin and sermon for next week’s worship. Just a more services left at Cutty’s this year. Labor day will be the final one. It may well be the last one I preach here. We have soft plans for spending less time here in the coming years and more time in Texas.

2018 August 17 Friday

2018 August 17 Friday in Grimes Iowa

65° and mostly clear start of the day.

As I was sitting outside waiting for the sunrise, I noticed that morning doves, ducks, and many other birds are beginning to flock together. I think fall may actually be on its way.

And finally, the sun arose.

.

We played games and ate at the senior center.

Ella’s shoulder had been bothering her for some time now. I’ve been telling her to make a doctor’s appointment. Today, after lunch, I dialed the doctor’s office and handed her the phone. They got her in within an hour and a half. After examining her, he said he thought it was a turn rotator cup.

We had just returned home (not even gotten out of the truck) when we heard sirens that sounded like they entered the campground and stopped. Immediately, we thought of our friends the Stones because their seasonal site is just inside the gate. We drove up there and there fire truck, ambulance, and sheriff’s SUV were at Stone’s RV. Sue, who is disabled, had fallen from her rolling chair. Tom was unable to lift her and called 911. Apparently she was alright just too shaken up.

Later in the evening 16 of us gathered at Cutty’s Adult Center to play Card Jackpot. Ella won a round and I split a jackpot with one other person.

The sky was completely overcast at sundown so no photo tonight.

2018 August 15 Wednesday

2018 August 15 Wednesday in Urbandale and Grimes Iowa

71° and misty in the morning. 86° by noon.

My day started with a trip to Firestone for plugs and wires. My Verizon HUM informed me of missfires so I made an appointment.

.

Rained slow and steady overnight. Slightly less than 1/2″ in the gauge this morning.

We didn’t make it Cutty’s Cafe this morning but went straight to the senior center after getting the truck serviced.

Caliburger was the regular meal today but the flex-meal was brats with saurkraut.
