2019 September 03 Tuesday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

74° and overcast (even though th the weather app said it is clear). I can’t believe that it reached 89° without the sun ever showing its face!

Such a tiny pinpoint of light.

We skipped going to the cafe for coffee this morning. I was doing some end of the season bookkeeping for our worship services. We served 98 people this year.

Because we missed the cafe, we arrived early at the Grimes senior center. We helped set up chairs and table decorations.

We were playing Fast Track and Sue did something I’d never seem done before. She got all four of her “men” on the board and lined up one behind the other at the start of the game.

Shortened hours have kicked in at the fee booth. I worked 1-7 today. This Friday I’ll work a normal 2-9. However, the remainder of my days will be the shortened “off season” hours.

God bless and g’nite

Day 120 in Iowa. 65 work days

2019 September 02 Monday

2019 September 02 Monday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

66° and mostly clear. Reached 81° but humidity mass it feel like like 88. Our air conditioner ran a bit today, something it hasn’t done much of lately.

And quite surprisingly, we had a five minute rain pass through just after dark.

Good morning, you tiny yellow ball.

There was a communal breakfast at Cutty’s Clubhouse this morning. All you can eat pancakes and French toast. The usual gang was there.

The Tree Memorial ceremony took place at 10 a.m. this morning. I gave a short talk including a quote by Pope Benedict XVI about heaven and God keeping us in his mind and heart. Sue Stone had a poem about an oak tree.

I worked 2 to 9 today. The camping season is winding down. Starting tomorrow we will be locking the gate at 7 p.m. And soon it will not be unlocked until later than the current 8 a.m.

God bless and g’nite

Day 119 in Iowa. 64 work days

2019 September 01 Sunday

rvingfulltimewithtomandella.com

2019 September 01 Sunday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

60° and hazy. Haze turned to clouds, which became overcast. Reached 79° which caused the air conditioning to run for about 30 minutes today.

We had 14 worshippers today. It was our final day, until Memorial Day 2020.

Proof that Henry was here yesterday.

It was Carnival Day at Cutty’s Campground. There we lots of activities for children and adults.

We went to Pizza Ranch for lunch. I had chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, and dressing. Ella had several different pizza flavors including spinach. We both had dessert pizzas. I had apple with ice cream. She had cherry and apple (I think).

This was the sky at about 4 o’clock. Already dark and gloomy.

About 5 o’clock we went up to Cutty Cafe and fed, Lord I don’t know how many, children ice cream. Some were great grandkids, some were neighbors of great grandkids, some were relatives of neighbors to great grandkids.

There was a knock at the door, as I was cooking supper. It was the twins. The twins are some special needs people that we have known since they were 13 years old. They are now in their 40s. They normally do not attend our worship service because Pine Car Racing takes place during the same time slot every Sunday. And they race the the cars that they have built. It is a very important event in their lives.

However, this week, Pine Car Racing will be on Labor Day Monday rather than on Sunday. Because of the time change, they attended worship this morning.

They came to ask me some questions about heaven and judgement. Keep in mind that, even though they are two very large men with greying and thinning hair, they are mentally still children.

I tackled being judgemental first. I said that we are not not to judge other people, because if we do. God will judge us in the same way. (Judge not lest ye be judged. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Etc.) I also told them that we were allowed and encouraged to have discernment. To recognize good and bad.

They seemed to follow my thinking.

Next came the hard one, heaven. I said I don’t know what what heaven is like.

I don’t believe that it has pearly gates and streets of gold. That those are concepts to try and explain a spiritual world to someone who only knows the physical world. I said that, through the centuries, prophets, philosophers, and theologians have tried to understand it.

To show how difficultit is to do, I told them to imagine that they had to explain “snow” to a blind person who lived in the tropics. How could you do that? You could say it is cold. But he has know idea what cold means. It is white. But he is blind and doesn’t know what white is. Maybe you could say that it’s like the ash from a fire that falls softly upon you. But does he really know what snow is like? No.

Jesus often said, “Heaven or the Kingdom of God is like …” He always discribed it not as a physical place but in terms of relationships or concepts.

What I do know is, we are told to love each other, forgive one another, and even to love our enemies.

Think about about what it means to love an enemy. If you truly love them, are they still your enemy? Now that doesn’t mean that they will stop seeing you as their enemy … but that is their problem, not yours.

I hope that I explained my beliefs in simple enough concepts that these,”kids” could understand.

God bless and g’nite

Day 118 in Iowa.

2019 August 31 Saturday

rvingfulltimewithtomandella.com

2019 August 31 Saturday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

62° and cloudy with sprinkles. The rain never came, but the clouds persisted, so that it only reached 67° for the high.

A tiny amount of color in the sky but mostly gray and overcast this morning.

The morning coffee club merry at the clubhouse instead of the cafe. We had eggs to order, hash browns, and sausage.

My sleep pattern for last night night … or more precisely, this morning.

We had the pleasure of watching great grandson, Henry, while dad and mom went kayaking down the Raccoon River.

Great grandma and Henry discussing how to put the lid on his milk. We went to the cafe for pizza. Then home for a nap.

Grandma playing with his favorite toy.

I laid some plywood on the bed of the truck. I them laid indoor / outdoor carpet. Then came the loading of things from our shed. Most of this stuff will go to the shed in Texas.

Our emergency food and water will stay in the truck as will our to-go duffle bags. Since we live in an RV trailer, we think it prudent to have emergency supplies in the truck. You never know when we might have to abandon our home because of wind, rain, floods, fires, or unknown events.

It was a good day to be outside. I spent some time picking up sticks and burning them.

It was also a good evening to sit and watch the fire.

God bless and g’nite

Day 117 in Iowa.

2019 August 30 Friday

rvingfulltimewithtomandella.com

2019 August 30 Friday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

63° and overcast. It topped out at 77° under a mostly cloudy sky.

Grey and overcast with some odd clouds.

Well, the reflecters may not be stylish but they should

With the new placement of the hings the rear hath opens wide now.

The white duck has been a good conversation starter this season.

Our coffee group this morning.

I found a function on my phone that I hadn’t been aware was there.

Three of a kind playing Fast Track.

It was a small turnout for lunch today at the senior center.

I worked 3 to 10 today. It was moderately busy most of the day, with occasional crazy-busy times. As darkness settled in, traffic and phone calls tapered off.

God bless and g’nite

Day 116 in Iowa. 62 work days.

2019 August 29 Thursday

rvingfulltimewithtomandella.com

2019 August 29 Thursday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

58° and clear. Now we’re getting closer to a normal August (2 days left in the month) weather with a high of 87°.

Now that is impressive!

Still impressive 45 minutes later.

Okay, okay! I’m impressed!

Not a large storm nor long lasting, but mighty!

A good morning for French toast. Also a good morning to not go to the cafe for coffee.

The sky cleared, the sun came out, and we went to the Grimes Senior Center for lunch and games.

I was low on the diabetic vitamin packs. However Walmart has discontinued selling them. I know that Costco carries a similar product so we went to Costco to buy vitamins. When I got to the checkout lane, I found out that my Costco membership had expired back in April. So I renewed it. I had completely forgotten about the fact that Ella and I had talked about not renewing it because we don’t use it often enough. Well I now have a membership that is good for another year. I guess I’ll need to find a reason to use my Costco membership more.

On the way home we stopped at Ace hardware for some reflectors and clear adhesive sealant. Theseare for my truck topper.

The first thing on my to do list was a … nap. I rested for about an hour. However, I only napped for about 5 minutes.

Then I worked on the topper some more. I changed the position of the hinge. That required to shorten the door by 1-1/2″ and reconnecting it. I did some touchup painting. I also installed the reflectors. I forgot to take photos. Sorry.

As we were leaving the resort for supper, we saw our grandson and his friend bringing their camping trailers into Cutty’s. After a drive through McDonald’s, we returned and found where they were setting up. They were busy and in a hurry to get to their homes, sojust said our hi and bye.

God bless and g’nite

Day 115 in Iowa.

2019 August 28 Wednesday

rvingfulltimewithtomandella.com

2019 August 28 Wednesday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

58° and clear.

We didn’t go to the cafe for coffee with the gang today. Instead we went to the senior center to have a public health nurse trim our toenails. I am no longer able to trim my own nails and when Ella had tried, it caused way too much pain for too little effect.

After lunch, they played bingo at the senior center. Ella played. I sat on the couch and worked on this week’s sermon. I hate to admit this but, I became so drowsy that I couldn’t continue. I hope that no one in the congregation goes to sleep. I may have to scrap it and begin again.

The last of my VA meds finally arrived at the post office today. For several weeks I’ve been receiving emails from the VA wanting me to take a survey about my recent experience with the VA pharmacy. However there was no place to say “I’ve only received a few of my prescriptions.” They’ve trickled in 1 or 2 at a time.

We got the whole gang together at Village Inn this afternoon. This may be the last time this season that all 12 of us will be together. And at the age of the group members, who’s to say if we will ever sit together again in this existence?

This evening the gals got together for Mexican Train dominoes. Francis and I were present but not participating.

The lake in the last rays of sun. I just missed a great shot as some of the geese flew just over my head.

The last color of day through the tree. Does anyone else think it looks like angry eyes?

God bless and g’nite

Day 114 in Iowa.

2019 August 27 Tuesday

rvingfulltimewithtomandella.com

2019 August 27 Tuesday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

60° bright and clear. 76 for the high while our Texas home is in the 100+ range.

Another working day for me and another play day for Ella at the senior center. I worked from 8 to 2:30 and then drove around the parkdoing site checks ( making sure that the computer records match the reality of what sites are occupied and which are empty.

Ella rode with me and marked the sheet while I drove.

Ella made a chicken and dressing casserole in the crockpot for supper.

I emailed the worship bulletin to the church office this afternoon and received confirmation this evening that they are printed and ready for pick up.

Day 113 in Iowa. 61 work days

2019 August 26 Monday

rvingfulltimewithtomandella.com

2019 August 26 Monday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

63° and cloudy. Barely made it out of the 60s until sunset when it touched 71°.

Ain’t no sunshine under a sky our gunmetal gray.

I worked from 8 to 2:30. It was very slow … which was okay for me. I was able to get a start on this week’s worship bulletin. I have only a nebulous thought for the sermon. It is enough, however, to choose some hymns to fit that sketch of an idea.

All day with no sunshine. Dark cloud all around us threatening us with storms that never appeared. Then at sundown the western sky cleared. For a moment or two the sun shone.

God bless and g’nite

Day 112 in Iowa. 60 work days

2019 August 25 Sunday

rvingfulltimewithtomandella.com

2019 August 25 Sunday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

61° and cloudy that became completely overcast and topped out at 69°.

After worship, we quickly got everything packed away and then went to Perkins for lunch. Ella’s cousin, Donna Jean, was here from Illinois and we had lunch together. I was a nice face to face conversation that are nearly impossible to do over the phone.

Speaking of the phone, we had barely left Perkins when Adam called. It was nice to hear from him. We won’t see him over Thanksgiving or Christmas because their family will be going on vacations during those times. Will get to Texas in time to see some off Tate’s football games. He had just recently had the cast removed from his arm. He broke it playing football last spring.

God bless and g’nite
