2019 August 14 Wednesday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

It began completely cloudless. That cloudless sky had let yesterday’s heat bleed off into space overnight. 4that is why it was only 61° this morning. The clouds regrouped and overthrew the sun so that it only reached 75°.

Coffee gang gathered at three cafe as usual this morning.

Fast Track was played at the center as usual.

I did not stay for lunch at the center. I left Ella to stay, eat, and play bingo. I went to Home Depot for some lumber and then home for lunch. I went to the center to get Ella just as the last round of bingo was being played.

This evening was domino night at Cutty’s. I went with Ella but did not play.

God bless and g’nite

70° and H.U.M.I.D! It briefly briefly tipped over into 80° but the humidity made it feel much warmer.

It rained early this morning and the clouds haven’t quite left yet.

Francis, Sandy, Sue, Ella, and I were at coffee this morning. “Little” Francis was here for a while and left. A short time later his daughter, Theresa, arrived. She stayed with us for a little while them left also.

We arrived at the Grimes senior center around ten this morning. We quickly got a game of Fast Track going.

Ella won the first one. I won the second round and then left Joyce and Ella to play by themselves while I worked on my blogs and sermon.

This was one year ago today (August12, 2018). I spent six hours in the emergency room due to an allergic reaction to onions. Now I carry an EpiPen everywhere I go.

This huge flower was abloom outside the senior center window.

God bless and g’nite

Day 98 in Iowa and work day 53

2019 August 11 Sunday

2019 August 11 Sunday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

75° and cloudy at the start of day. Got up to 82° in spite of all the clouds.

Breakfast was a drive through at Burger King. $4 for 2 sausage egg and cheese croissan’wichs, small tater rounds, and a small coffee.

We conducted worship at Cutty’s adult center as we usually do on Sunday mornings. Today’s message was “Faith“.

Lunch was at home. Shredded beef, on a tortilla with cheese, sour cream, and salsa.

Worked from 2 to 9. We head some excitement late afternoon when the power went out for large sections of Cutty’s West side. More Mid America power trucks came in just before I locked the gate for the night

The eastern sky painted by the setting sun

Does anyone else see a puppy with one paw in the air?

2019 August 10 Saturday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

54° start

Eggs and bacon. Bacon and eggs.

I worked 11 to 7 today. That meant that I had time to go for coffee this morning. Sandy and Francis, Ella and I were all that were there today.

In honor of the Iowa State Fair in progress, Cutty’s theme for three weekend was the fair. Our own Varied Industries Building was the big pavilion on Main Street.

As we were finishing our coffee, the venders were setting out their wares.

I left to fill Rudolf’s tanks while Ella examined the goods. After getting gas, I returned to the cafe and waited for Ella. As I waited, I ordered a “Heavy Pizza” to go. The heavy had everything – all the toppings. I ordered with no onions and no jalapenos.

No onions because I am allergic and no jalapenos because Ella doesn’t like them.

Ella arrived just as the pizza arrived. It was nearly time for me to start work. We drove to the fee booth, parked, and are the pizza. Then I went to work.

It was busy but not crazy busy today. I actually left work at 6:30 because Julie was alright alone forthe remainder of her shift. She worked 3-10. Teri had worked the morning shift and left at 3:30.

God bless and g’nite

54° start and 85° high.

I worked 8-3:30 today

Ella played card.jackpot this evening and can home broke. She lost the entire $.75! Grin.

I went to Wal-Mart to pick up my prescription and a few perishables. I returned home before I realized that I didn’t get my meds. So back I went.

Saw some interesting clouds as I was coming out of Wally world fire the second time.

God bless and g’nite

Day 95 in Iowa and work day 50

2019 August 08 Thursday

rvingfulltimewithtomandella.com

2019 August 08 Thursday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

68° and cloudy. “Another cold front will also trigger showers and thunderstorms from the central Plains into the Midwest. Afternoon temperatures will be 70s and 80s because of the clouds and rainfall.

More widely scattered and less organized thunderstorms will develop this afternoon across the Midwest.” (By WeatherBug Sr. Meteorologist, James West)

The sun peeked hopefully over the horizon and was quickly swallowed by hungry clouds.

For breakfast I fixed scrambled eggs, bacon, and cheddar cheese in flour tortilla shells. I had intended to add salsa, but I forgot. I just served the salsa as a side.

After breakfast we went to the cafe and found more of the gang had returned. Sandy and Francis, Stoney and Sue, Bob, Ella and I.

At the senior center, we had Swedish meatballs with potatoes and gravy*. Except the the meatballs were missing allspice and cardamom. The gravy had neither milk, cream, or sour cream in it. It was just a gelatinous brown mass. You can call a cow a horse. But that doesn’t make it a horse. *And these were not Swedish meatballs.

I mentioned to Ella that I would like to build a higher box on the back of the pickup so that we can haul more stuff back and forth. I have already built a box in the truck bed. (See photos above) I just want to raise it 18″-24″.

She suggested that we should just look for a topper for the back of the pickup.

Good idea! So much simpler!

We drove across town to the only place I knew that actually sold those pickup topper shells. He had only one that would fit our truck and it was the wrong color. Our truck is charcoal gray and the topper was burgundy. It was also $685 which was more than I intend to spend. I can build my raised box way cheaper.

Next Ella suggested we ask son John, the mechanic. We drove to his work and only interrupted him for a few minutes. He said that was probably the best price that we would pay anywhere. And he didn’t know of any others. But he would ask around.

We drove a long and twisted route to get back to Cutty’s. While we were in town we went to the Beaver Bend area of Urbandale and stopped at Snookie’s Malt Shop.

I had two “Sheldon Cooper” moments at Snookies today. First of all I’m bothered by the two “S”s that are upside down in this sign.

Secondly, I ordered a medium chocolate malt and was given a small. When they discovered the error, they brought an additional small malt. With leaves me wondering, after I drink the appropriate amount of the second malt to equal a medium, what am I to do with the remainder? It seems dishonest to drink more malt than I paid for. Suggestion?

The remainder of the day was spent in mind numbing tv watching.

God bless and g’nite

I seldom repost things from other sites. However, this was too spot-on for me to not share.

GROWING OLD

My dear God, you know I am growing oldKeep me from becoming too talkative, from repeating all my jokes and anecdotes, and particularly keep from falling into the tiresome habit of expressing an opinion on every subject.Release me from craving to straighten out everyone’s affairs.Keep my mind free from recital of endless details.

Give me wings to get to the point.Give me the grace, dear God, to listen to others as they describe their aches and pains.Help me end the boredom with patience and keep my lips sealed, for my own aches and pains are increasing in number and intensity, and the pleasure of discussing them as becoming sweeter as the years go by.

Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I might be mistaken.

Keep me reasonably sweet. I don’t wish to be a saint (saints are so hard to live with), but a sour person is the work of the devil.

Make me thoughtful, but not moody, helpful, but not pushy, independent, yet able to accept with graciousness favours others wish to bestow on me.

Free me of the notion that simply because I have lived a long time, I am wiser than those who haven’t lived so long. I am older, but not necessarily wiser! If I don’t approve of some of the changes that have taken place in recent years, give me the wisdom to keep my mouth shut.

God, please know that when the end comes, I would like to have a friend or two left.

Good crowd today. It is bingo Wednesday which draws a crowd.

Duane joined us for Fast Track today. Duane makes these game boards and sells them while making a very small profit.

As I mentioned, today is bingo day, we stayed so that Ella could play Bingo. I read and even napped a little on the couch, waiting for the bingo games to be over.

Village Inn was or next stop. For years now we and friends have gathered at Village Inn for Pie Rush Wednesdays. With any purchase (even a cup of coffee) you received a free slice out any of the double crusted fruit pies.

That has changed. Now you must purchase an entree to receive a free slice of double crusted fruit pie. Our group of friends gathered at Village Inn but we all decided to order just a slice of pie which was cheaper than ordering an entree to get a free slice of pie.

One week ago we made a pact to not go to Wal-Mart for at least a week. It had been 8 days without a Wal-Mart purchase. To celebrate this milestone, we spent a round $80 at Wal-Mart today.

About 6:30 this evening Ella went to Cutty’s adult center to play Mexican Train dominoes.

Day 93 in Iowa

2019 August 06 Tuesday

rvingfulltimewithtomandella.com

2019 August 06 Tuesday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

66° overnight and

I like the way the early morning sun shone on my closed Venetian blinds. I found the pattern pleasing, so I took a photo of it. It’s kind of artsy, don’t you think?

Today is a “free day”. I do not work today. We are not going to the senior center today. We have no plans for grocery shopping. We have no laundry to do. The only thing on our calendar for today is later this evening.

We planed to attend National Night Out at Union Park United Methodist Church. There will be food, games, DJ music, free school supplies for Union Park neighborhood residents.

However, as we were on the way to UPUMC, Ella received a call from son John inviting us to have supper with them at “Felix and Oscar’s”.

We had already passed the exit we would have taken to get to the restaurant. So we proceeded to the east side of town, got off the interstate,6 went under the interstate, and got back on the interstate headed back where we had just come from.

We arrived at the restaurant and got a table and then waited for John and Dawn.

I noticed that it isn’t “Felix and Oscar’s” now. All of that signage is goneand it is now “F&O’s”, which means that it has been legally reorganized, possibly under new owners who did not purchase the original name. At any rate, they still have good Chicagostyle deepdish pizza.

It was after 1 this morning that I finally went to sleep and yet I woke at 6 this morning.

I’m one of those people who normally wake very early in the day. And it seems that it doesn’t make a difference as to what time I go to sleep. I still wake up early. Unlike my loving wife who considers sleep one of her best friends and would return to sleep as often and as long as possible.

Because this is a “free day” for us I let her sleep just as long as she wants. So, it surprised me when she was up and getting dressed before 8.

We had our normal breakfast of 1 toast, 1 bacon (thick cut and crisp), 2 eggs, a handful of medicines, vitamins, and supplements, and something to wash it all down (coffee for her – ice tea for me).

Sitting on the patio with a soft cool breeze and the beautiful canopies of green overhead. It is a great day.

We went to the cafe for coffee with friends. However, Sue was the only other one there.

We took a drive, in our neighbor’s golf cart, around the park. On our way home from the cafe, as we were passing by a site, a woman yelled, “Can you braid hair?”

Ella braided her hair.

Once we were home, I spread a bag of dark mulch on our yard. I had done half of it a week or so ago. The be mulch looks much darker but that is only because it its damp.

Our “yard” is a about 4’×60′ and bordered on each end by large sugar-maple trees. Because of the trees, the ground gets nearly 0% sunlight and nothing (not even weeds) will grow there. When we first moved to this site it was one long mudpuddle. I put down landscaping timbers, edging, and mulch. It makes a much more attractive addition to or patio.

Speaking of patios, it was such a nice day, that we sat on the patio for a long time playing Fast Track.

God bless and g’nite

Day 92 in Iowa

2019 August 05 Monday

rvingfulltimewithtomandella.com

2019 August 05 Monday in Cutty’s, Grimes, Iowa

64° overnight and 71° at sunrise with a few clouds. Reached 86 even with clouds.

Waiting for the sunrise.

An egg yoke sunrise this morning.

The Cutty’s Coffee group was down to 4 today Francis and Sandy, Ella and I. We had a little shopping to do before going tothe senior center, so we left the cafe early.

Lunch at the center was a disappointing mess of overcooked elbow macaroni and mushy, way-too-sweet BBQ pork.

Speaking of culinary delights …

Any resemblance to the actual food is purely coincidental.

And yet I continue to eat them for my lunches because they are convenient.

God bless and g’nite
